Welcome to the 1932 Criterion Theatre
Operated by the Bar Harbor Jazz Festival, the Criterion is a nonprofit cinema, theatre, multimedia art producer and venue committed to safeguarding a historic space for stories, storytellers, and audiences.
Central to this mission is sharing the space with the community, so, welcome in, and enjoy the show.
Executive Director Eli Mellen said during a recent tour of the building’s interior that fostering the feeling that the theater is an important hub of the area is one of the primary goals held by himself and the nonprofit’s board of directors.
With your support we hope to become the fixture of the Mount Desert Island community we once were.
The 1932 Criterion Theatre is excited to announce that Eli Mellen has been hired as executive director. "We are really excited about having Eli at the helm," said Criterion board president, Michael Boland. "Eli's experience working with nonprofits on Mount Desert Island and his passion for arts and the community make him a great fit to lead the Criterion into the future.”
The Bar Harbor Jazz Festival was founded as a 501c3 arts organization in 2003. In late 2014, it purchased the historical 1932 Criterion Theatre.
The Bar Harbor Jazz Festival was recently the recipient of an extremely generous donation, that enabled the Festival to purchase the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor!
