The Criterion Theatre received a $5,000 grant from Davis Family Foundation to help fund the “Film for All Initiative,” a commitment to increasing inclusion and accessibility of the theatre through purchase and installation of ADA compliant assistive listening systems.
“The spaces in which we gather together should be a reflection of the values we hold as a community” said Kristin Leffler, Community Outreach Manager and Development Associate at The Criterion. “The Criterion strives to be a fully inclusive space where everyone has access to enjoy a film on the big screen. We are so grateful that Davis Family Foundation is committed to helping us reach this goal.”
Assistive listening devices include both closed captioning systems for the hearing impaired and audio description through wireless headsets for those who are vision impaired. Any patron who requires these devices will be able to request them from a Criterion staff member at the start of the film. The entire system can cost up to $20,000 to purchase, install and implement, and The Criterion continues to seek funding from foundations and donors in order to install it by summer 2018.
If you would like to make a donation toward the “Film for All Initiative” please email Kristin Leffler at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the theatre at 207-288-0829.
