(Bar Harbor, ME)-- The 1932 Criterion Theatre welcomes Tamara Crowley as Interim Executive Director starting May 1.
Crowley grew up in the Ellsworth area with ties to Northeast Harbor. Before recently accepting the Interim Executive Director position, Crowley worked as Vice President of Operations for a global firm that specializes in executive leadership development. She said she looks forward to taking that experience and skillset and focusing her efforts locally.
“This theatre is at the heart of the community,” Crowley said. “It was a great opportunity to take 20 plus years of professional experience and plop it right down in the middle of a personal passion within my own community. I’m looking forward to continuing the great success of the theatre, working with really talented, creative people and bringing diversity of the arts to this stage.”
The Criterion Board of Directors interviewed several candidates to fill an Interim Executive Director position after outgoing Director Heather Martin gave notice that she was stepping down to pursue her Master’s degree.
“The Criterion’s board is thrilled to have Tamara Crowley on board. She brings a great sense of fun and collaboration to all her endeavors. Couple that with Tamara’s roots in the community, her keen intelligence, and kind nature, along with her understanding of the Criterion’s special place in the Mount Desert Island community, and she’s really just exceptional. I look forward to seeing what she’ll do at the theater,” said Carrie Jones, vice president of the Criterion. “We had multiple, wonderful candidates for the position, but Tamara is without a doubt the right leader for the Criterion at this point in its growth.”
Crowley said she hopes to continue the strong membership program, expand volunteer initiatives, seek out unique performances, and connect with more local businesses for sponsorships.
“My business mind is about sustainability, financial health, and creating greater connections” she said. “I’m looking forward to creating a sense of community ownership and stewardship. It’s an honor to be here. I’m just really looking forward to creating this part of The Criterion’s story while I’m listening to everybody else’s individual stories about the theatre.”
